Direct Entry (DE) is the route into a Nigerian university for candidates who already hold an advanced qualification. DE students usually start at 200 level, saving a year compared with UTME entrants.
Who can apply through Direct Entry?
- A’Level holders: JUPEB, IJMB, Cambridge A’Level.
- National Diploma (ND) holders from polytechnics.
- Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) holders.
- HND holders, and some degree holders for a second degree, depending on the university.
You also need the usual O’Level requirements for your course.
How DE registration works
DE candidates do not write the UTME. They register with JAMB for Direct Entry. In 2026, DE e-PIN vending and registration ran from 2 March to 25 April 2026, the DE e-PIN cost ₦5,700, and registration was done only at JAMB state and zonal offices.
DE screening at the university
Most universities run a DE screening alongside Post-UTME. It is usually a document screening rather than a test. Common requirements:
- JAMB DE registration slip.
- A’Level, ND or NCE result or certificate, with the grade or CGPA required for your course.
- O’Level result(s).
- Birth certificate and state of origin certificate.
- Passport photographs and the screening payment receipt.
Grade requirements
Each university and course sets its own DE requirements. Typical examples:
| Qualification | Usual requirement |
|---|---|
| JUPEB / IJMB / A’Level | Passes in two or three relevant subjects, with a minimum point score set by the school |
| ND | Upper Credit or above in a related course (some accept Lower Credit) |
| NCE | Merit or above in relevant subjects |
Confirm the requirements for your course in the JAMB brochure and your university’s screening notice.
Admission on CAPS
DE admissions are processed on JAMB CAPS like UTME admissions. Accept your offer there. See our CAPS guide.
Frequently asked questions
Can DE students study Medicine?
Some universities admit DE candidates into Medicine at 200 level with strong A’Level science results; many do not. Check each university’s rules.
Is DE admission easier than UTME?
DE has a separate quota, and competition depends on the course. Strong A’Level or ND grades make a real difference.
