The NELFUND student loan portal for 2026/2027 opened on 23 September 2026, and applications close on 31 December 2026, according to the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS). Many students get stuck on the same few problems. Here is how to solve them.
Problem 1: NIN verification fails
- Check that you typed the 11-digit NIN correctly.
- Make sure your NIN details (name, date of birth) match your school records.
- If your NIN record has an error, correct it with NIMC first, then try again after the update reflects.
Problem 2: “Institution not found” or “student record not found”
The loan relies on your school uploading student data to NELFUND.
- Check that your institution is on NELFUND’s list of eligible institutions.
- Ask your school’s NELFUND desk or student affairs office whether your details have been uploaded.
- Fresh students may need to wait until the school uploads the new intake.
Problem 3: Name mismatch
If the name on your NIN, BVN, JAMB and school records differ (for example, a missing middle name or a different spelling), verification can fail. Correct the wrong record, starting with the one that differs from the others.
Problem 4: BVN issues
- Use a BVN registered in your own name.
- Make sure the phone number on your BVN is active.
Problem 5: Application submitted but no update
Your application goes through verification by your institution. Check the portal and your email regularly, and confirm with your school that they have verified the new list.
