NELFUND Student Loan 2026/2027: How to Apply Before the December Deadline

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has opened applications for the 2026/2027 academic session. According to a statement by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), the portal opened on 23 September 2026 and applications close on 31 December 2026.

The loan helps students in public tertiary institutions pay their fees, so it is worth applying early if paying school fees is a challenge for you or your family.

What the NELFUND loan covers

  • Tuition and institutional charges, paid directly to your institution.
  • Upkeep allowance, paid to eligible students to help with living costs.

The loan is interest-free. Repayment begins after you complete your studies and the mandatory NYSC programme, once you are earning an income.

Who can apply

  • Nigerian students admitted into or studying in public universities, polytechnics, colleges of education and other approved institutions.
  • Your institution must be on the list of NELFUND-approved institutions and must have uploaded your details.
  • Both fresh and returning students can apply.

What you need

  • National Identification Number (NIN).
  • Bank Verification Number (BVN).
  • JAMB registration number.
  • Admission letter (fresh students) or matriculation number (returning students).
  • Active email address and phone number.

How to apply

  1. Visit the official NELFUND portal.
  2. Click to sign up and verify your identity with your NIN.
  3. Complete your profile and confirm your institution and course details.
  4. Submit your loan application and upload any requested documents.
  5. Monitor your email and the portal for verification by your institution.

Tips to avoid delays

  • Make sure your NIN, BVN, JAMB and school records show the same name.
  • Check with your school’s NELFUND desk that your details have been uploaded.
  • Never pay anyone to “process” your loan. Application is free.
  • Apply early, not in the last week of December.
