Not every candidate gets admission into their first-choice university. If the 31 October 2026 deadline for public universities passes without an offer, don’t give up. Several options are still available for the 2026/2027 session.
1. Private universities (deadline: 30 November 2026)
Private universities have until 30 November 2026 to complete admissions. Many accept candidates who scored at least 150. Fees are higher, so compare costs carefully. Browse private universities in our schools by state directory.
2. Polytechnics (minimum score: 100)
Polytechnics can admit candidates with a UTME score of 100 and above. An ND followed by an HND or Direct Entry into a university is a well-trodden route. The polytechnic deadline is 31 December 2026.
3. Colleges of education (no UTME needed for NCE)
From 2026/2027, NCE candidates with at least four credit passes no longer need the UTME. See our NCE exemption explainer. After the NCE you can enter a university through Direct Entry.
4. Change of course or institution
JAMB said the change of course and institution window would open only after the mop-up examination. If your score qualifies for another course or school, a change may help.
5. Pre-degree, JUPEB or IJMB programmes
A one-year A’Level programme such as JUPEB or IJMB lets you enter a university at 200 level through Direct Entry the following year.
6. National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN)
NOUN admits students throughout the year and is a flexible option, especially if you want to work while studying.
7. Prepare for the 2027 UTME
If none of these suits you, use the next few months to prepare for the 2027 UTME. See our 2027 UTME preview.

If you choose to rewrite the UTME
- Use the gap productively: study, learn a skill, or get a part-time job.
- Fix any weak O’Level subjects through the NECO GCE or WAEC GCE.
- Choose your 2027 institution and course carefully, using real cut-off data.
- Prepare early for the 2027 UTME.
Avoid admission scams
When candidates are desperate, scammers offer “special admission” for money. No genuine admission is sold. Every admission must be accepted on JAMB CAPS. Read our guide to admission scams.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use the same UTME result for a polytechnic?
Yes, if you meet the polytechnic’s minimum score and change your institution on the JAMB portal when the window opens.
Is a polytechnic HND equal to a degree?
HND holders can enter many universities through Direct Entry or postgraduate diploma routes. NUC has ordered universities to stop HND-to-BSc conversion and top-up programmes.
