Payment mistakes happen: a bank debit that doesn’t reflect, the wrong invoice paid, or a duplicate payment. Most problems can be fixed if you act quickly and keep your evidence.
Step 1: Gather your evidence
- The Remita Retrieval Reference (RRR) or invoice number.
- Your bank debit alert or statement showing the payment.
- Screenshots of the portal showing the problem.
- Your matriculation number or JAMB registration number.
Common problems and solutions
| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| Debited but portal says “unpaid” | Wait a few hours, then check the RRR status on Remita. If it shows paid, take the evidence to the bursary or ICT unit. |
| Paid the wrong invoice (e.g. hostel instead of school fees) | Write to the bursary to request a transfer of the payment or a refund, with your evidence. |
| Paid twice | Request a refund or ask for the extra payment to be applied to the next session. |
| Payment failed but money was deducted | Contact your bank. Failed transactions are usually reversed, but report it with the transaction reference. |
| Paid less than the invoice | Generate a new invoice for the balance, following the school’s instructions. |
Step 2: Contact the right office
- Bursary: for payments, refunds and transfers.
- ICT or portal support: for payments that don’t show on the portal.
- Your bank: for failed or reversed transactions.
Step 3: Follow up in writing
Keep copies of any letters or emails and the names of officers you spoke to. Follow up weekly.
Avoid problems next time
Always generate a fresh invoice on your student portal and pay using its RRR. See our guide on paying school fees safely.
