Matriculation in Nigerian Universities: What It Is and Why It Matters

Matriculation is the formal ceremony where newly admitted students are admitted into the university community. At most Nigerian universities, fresh students take a matriculation oath, promising to obey the rules of the university.

When does it happen?

Usually a few weeks to a few months after resumption, once fresh students have completed clearance and registration. Your university announces the date.

Who can matriculate?

  • Students who have accepted admission on JAMB CAPS.
  • Students who have paid the acceptance fee and school fees.
  • Students who have completed clearance and course registration.

Students who haven’t completed these steps may not be allowed to matriculate.

What happens at matriculation

  1. Students gather, often in academic gowns.
  2. The Vice-Chancellor addresses the new students.
  3. Students take the matriculation oath.
  4. Students may sign the matriculation register.

Your matriculation number

Your matriculation number is your unique student ID. You’ll use it for course registration, exams, results and later for your transcript and certificate. It is usually issued after clearance, before or around matriculation.

Why it matters

  • It confirms you are a bona fide student of the university.
  • Some universities require matriculation before you can write exams or receive results.
  • It is part of your official student record.

Before your matriculation

  • Finish all clearance steps. See 10 things to do after admission.
  • Check the dress code and whether gowns are provided or hired.
  • Read the student handbook. The oath commits you to its rules.
