The UTME is a computer-based test (CBT) taken at accredited centres. Many good candidates lose marks on exam day because of panic, poor time management or simple rule breaches. This guide helps you avoid that.
Before exam day
- Print your exam slip from the JAMB portal when it becomes available. It shows your centre, date and time.
- Visit the centre a day before if you can, so you know how long it takes to get there.
- Practise on a computer. Use CBT practice software or JAMB’s mock exam if you registered for it.
- Sleep well. Late-night reading the day before rarely helps.
What to bring
- Your printed exam slip.
- Arrive early: centres start biometric verification well before the session.
What not to bring
- Phones, smartwatches, calculators, earpieces or any electronic device.
- Bags, books, notes or papers.
- Anything you can’t explain to an invigilator. Prohibited items can lead to your result being withheld or cancelled.
How the CBT works
- Your fingerprint is verified before you enter the hall.
- You’ll be assigned a computer. Check that your name and photograph on screen are yours.
- You answer English plus your three other subjects. You can move between subjects and questions.
- A timer shows how much time is left. The system submits automatically when time runs out.
- An on-screen calculator is provided.
Time management tips
- Answer the easy questions first in each subject, then return to the hard ones.
- Don’t leave questions blank. There is no negative marking in the UTME.
- Watch the clock. Check the timer every 20 to 30 minutes.
- Use the review option to revisit questions you were unsure about.
- Don’t submit early. Use any spare time to check your answers.
If something goes wrong
- If your computer freezes, raise your hand immediately and tell the invigilator. Don’t try to fix it yourself.
- If your biometrics fail, follow the centre’s instructions. JAMB has procedures for affected candidates.
- If you miss your exam because of a technical fault at the centre, follow JAMB announcements about rescheduled sessions.
After the exam
Check your result by SMS or on the JAMB portal when results are released. Our guide explains how to check your JAMB result and print the original slip.
