The Federal Ministry of Education has proposed a harmonised timetable for Nigeria’s major external examinations in 2027. Under the plan, the UTME would hold in March, the school-certificate exams would run from April to July, and all results would be out by August so that admissions can begin in September.
The ministry announced the plan on Wednesday, 14 October 2026. It followed a meeting in Abuja chaired by the Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, with the heads of the exam bodies. The plan is part of the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI).
The proposed 2027 dates
| Exam | Body | Proposed dates |
|---|---|---|
| UTME | JAMB | 15–25 March 2027 (results in March) |
| SSCE (internal) | NECO | 1 April – 14 May 2027 |
| WASSCE (school candidates) | WAEC | 11 May – 18 June 2027 |
| NBC/NTC | NABTEB | 1 June – 5 July 2027 |
| SSCE | NBAIS | 10 June – 9 July 2027 |
NECO, WAEC, NABTEB and NBAIS results are targeted for release in August 2027.
Why the change
For years, exam calendars have overlapped. Some candidates write WAEC and NECO papers in the same weeks, and late results have kept qualified students out of early admission batches. The ministry says aligning the dates will:
- reduce clashes between exams;
- get results out in time for tertiary admissions;
- improve coordination across the sector.
What it means for 2027 candidates
If the plan holds, the 2027 UTME would come about a month earlier than recent UTMEs, which have usually been written in April and May. That gives SS3 students less time between the UTME and their school-certificate exams. Our advice:
- Start UTME preparation now, not in the new year.
- Get your NIN sorted early. UTME registration requires it, and an earlier exam likely means earlier registration. Read what to expect for 2027 UTME registration.
- Check your subject combination against your course before you register. See subject combinations for popular courses.
Is it final?
No. The ministry described the dates as a proposal. It says it will keep working with the exam bodies on compliance and accountability for results release. Each exam body is expected to confirm its own timetable. We’ll update this page when JAMB, WAEC and NECO publish their official 2027 schedules.
