Hostel Accommodation in Nigerian Universities: How Allocation Works and What It Costs

For many fresh students, finding accommodation is as stressful as getting admission. Most Nigerian universities have far fewer hostel spaces than students, so you need to act quickly once you are admitted.

How hostel allocation usually works

  • Portal application: Most universities open a hostel portal after school fees payment. Spaces are allocated first-come, first-served or by balloting.
  • Priority groups: Fresh students, final-year students and students with disabilities are often given priority.
  • Private hostels on campus: Many universities now have privately built hostels on campus under partnership arrangements. These cost more than university-owned halls.

Steps to apply

  1. Pay your acceptance fee and school fees first. Most portals won’t let you apply for a hostel until you have paid.
  2. Log in to the hostel portal as soon as it opens.
  3. Choose your preferred hall and room type if allowed.
  4. Pay the accommodation fee using the invoice generated on the portal.
  5. Print your allocation slip and present it at the hall.

Living off campus

If you don’t get a hostel space, you will need to rent privately. Costs depend heavily on location. A room close to campus in Lagos or Abuja costs far more than one in a smaller town. Before paying:

  • Inspect the room in person.
  • Ask about water, electricity and security.
  • Get a written receipt and tenancy agreement.
  • Avoid agents who demand payment for rooms you haven’t seen.

Frequently asked questions

Do private universities provide hostels?

Most private universities require students to live on campus, and accommodation is included in the fees.

Can I swap rooms after allocation?

Some schools allow swaps through the hall office. Unofficial “sale” of bed spaces is usually prohibited.
