How to Pay School Fees Safely With Remita (and Avoid Fee Scams)

Most public universities in Nigeria collect fees through the federal government’s Treasury Single Account (TSA), usually using Remita. Paying the right way protects you from losing money and from delays during registration.

Step 1: Generate your invoice on the school portal

Log in to your student portal and select the fee you want to pay. The portal will generate an invoice with a Remita Retrieval Reference (RRR) number. The RRR is linked to you and to the exact amount you owe.

Step 2: Pay using the RRR

  • Online: Pay with your debit card on the payment page linked from your portal.
  • Bank app: Many banks let you pay a Remita RRR directly in their apps.
  • Bank branch: Present the RRR at any bank that supports Remita payments.

Step 3: Confirm and print your receipt

Return to your school portal and confirm the payment. Print the official receipt and keep a PDF copy. You will need it for course registration and clearance.

Common fee scams to avoid

  • “Pay into my account and I’ll process it for you.” Never pay school fees into a personal account.
  • Fake portals that copy your school’s design. Always type your school’s official web address yourself.
  • “Admission racket” offers promising admission or hostel space for money.
  • Fake “fee reduction” notices on WhatsApp. Confirm with the bursary department.

If your payment fails or isn’t reflecting

  1. Wait a few hours, then check the portal again.
  2. Check the RRR status on Remita.
  3. If your account was debited but the portal shows “unpaid”, take your bank statement and RRR to the bursary or ICT unit.

Frequently asked questions

Can someone else pay my fees?

Yes. A parent or sponsor can pay using your RRR from anywhere.

Are Remita charges included in the fee?

A small processing charge may be added. It will show on the payment page before you confirm.
